Buzzing!
That’s how I felt two years ago after running my first RR10. After hearing about my race, my partner in a bout of FOMO, joined a running club to take part himself. If you’re new and don’t know what an RR10 is (and lets be honest it’s not clear from the acronym), please read on, I’d love the opportunity to convert you too.
What?
The RR10s are the summer cross country races hosted by local running clubs, generally 6-7km (4-5miles) in distance.
Where?
They take place off-road in country parks, playing fields and trails.
When?
Fortnightly on a Wednesday evening throughout the summer, usually starting at 7pm. The first one this year is 23 April at Places Leisure, Fleming Park. On weeks when there is a RR10, they replace our Bitterne Wednesday run.
Why?
Because it’s running, and mostly running in beautiful countryside on glorious summer evenings and with cake at the end! Oh, and have I mentioned they’re free? They’re included in your club membership. In my opinion there’s not a better way to spend the mid-week hump day!

Here’s what to expect at your first race:
A mass of tents and flags representing each running club taking part. There’s no worry “where do I go/what do I do?” When you arrive head for our teal flag and you’ll find sisters ready to welcome you to your first RR10. We’ll take a team pic before we head to the start line.
Off-road terrain, including trail, gravel, grass and mud. The earlier races in the season are generally the muddiest. Splashing through puddles is all part of the fun.
Runners of various speeds, from super speedy to slow and steady. Whatever your pace there will be someone to run with. As well as lots of lovely marshals cheering you on.
Cake. Have I already mentioned cake at the finish line – yum!
Hopefully, you’re thinking of giving one a go, here’s what you need to do:
Register your parkrun barcode (you only need to do this once). Bring your barcode on the evening for scanning. Register here: https://www.rr10.org.uk
Wear your club top. League rules state that every runner has to wear their club kit.
Tips:
Bring a bottle of water and a jumper/jacket. You can leave these in the tent during the race.
It’s a good idea to car share. There are always sisters attending. Have a chat at your club runs or pop a post on social media.
Trail shoes recommended.
Check the route and weather in case things such as bug spray or sun cream are required
Looking forward to seeing you at an RR10 soon 😊
P.S 11th June is the race we host at Ampfield so we supply the marshals, token givers and most importantly the cake. Danielle will be in touch closer to the time to find out who can volunteer, remember volunteering gets points towards the club London Marathon spot process.....
